A native of Lincoln County, Meredith A Shuford is proud to work for the people in the community where she was raised and has chosen to raise her family. Ms. Shuford’s desire to assist those in crisis is paramount to her decision to focus on family law.

Prior to joining the firm in January 2021, Ms. Shuford served as a District Court Judge in Lincoln and Cleveland Counties for fourteen years. She made thousands of decisions affecting families and children in custody, child support, spousal support and property division cases. She also obtained certification as a Juvenile Court Judge in July 2012, which involved intensive training in Child Development, Substance Abuse and Domestic Violence issues.

Prior to serving as a Judge, Ms. Shuford practiced law for ten years in Lincolnton, NC with her father, Thomas M. Shuford, Jr and their partner, Robert Lewis gaining valuable experience in all areas of the law. During the last five years in private practice, she served as the Guardian ad Litem Attorney Advocate representing children who were alleged to be abused and neglected.

Ms. Shuford is a graduate of Lincolnton High School, and she has enjoyed cheering for the Wolves during the time each of her children has been involved in sports and extracurricular activities. Ms. Shuford graduated from NC State University with a BA in Communications. After working for three years in marketing and advertising in Charlotte, NC, she returned to school to pursue a career in the law. Ms. Shuford graduated Cum Laude with a Juris Doctor from NC Central University in 1997. While in law school, she received intensive training regarding children’s issues in the law at the University of Michigan Law School, through the Kellogg Foundation. She interned with the Guardian ad Litem program in Durham, NC, including serving as a Guardian ad Litem for abused and neglected children.

Ms. Shuford is certified from the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission to conduct mediations of Equitable Distribution and other Family Financial Cases in District Court Actions. The certification requires the applicant to have significant experience in family law cases, observe mediations conducted by other certified mediators, and complete a 40 hour training course to develop best practices for conducting mediations.

Ms. Shuford is an active member in her church, previously serving two 3-year terms on church council, serving on the call committee, serving as a Sunday school teacher and youth leader. In addition to spending time with her family, Ms. Shuford enjoys hiking, riding her road bike in the country and playing tennis.
